Warrior Queen: Great Imagery, Poor Photography
Warrior Queen is a film that hits in many important respects and consistently misses in one very important respect. The vidcap you see above is a great example of what I'm talking about. It's a slavegirl auction scene that does many of the things that really crank up the hottitude in slavegirl auction scenes. The slaves are auctioned stark naked (Yay!) in bondage (Yay!) and are in fact suspended by their wrists, powerfully establishing their helplessness and vulnerability in visual terms.
But all these pluses are greatly diminished by the very bad cinematography seen above. The slavegirl's body is almost completely lost in the background of the bidders behind her. Compare her with the older auctioneer's body, perfectly outlined against the purple curtain behind him. Think how much more powerful visually her suspended, naked body would have been if audiences had been able to, you know ... SEE it!
The slavegirl who is one of the main characters in the story is also seen suspended by her wrists, but we never get a full body shot of her, just a panning shot that's pretty much a closeup. Great ogling, except for the bad lighting that plagues every scene in the movie.
This closeup of a blond slave hanging by her wrists naked before the bidders is of course much more powerful than the middle distance and long shots like the one seen above. You can see something like fear and apprehension on her face, against the hard-eyed examination of the bidders. It would be EVEN MORE powerful if we could have seen her helplessly bound hands above her in this shot.
This scene would be an easy 15 on my slavegirl hottitudinal index, a very respectable score, but I'm gonna have to deny the double points for public setting and humiliation, just because of the bad cinematography. I'm strict, man. I cover all the bad cinematography in my review of Warrior Queen.
