Here we have a series of images from Domination Alley, a commercial bondage film from the 1980s that demonstrates the dramatic potential of the wrist-ankle tie very well (even though the damsel's wrists are actually tied to her knees, the principles are pretty much the same in either case).
Most often, slavegirls in movies are tied in static position that sometimes leave them helpless but don't provide much opportunity in the writhing department. Not like a wrist-ankle tie does, and writhing adds GREATLY to the visual drama of a slavegirl (or DiD) in bondage. A damsel who is writhing desperately to escape her bonds has reason to fear something, ramping up the drama far beyond a damsel who stands, sits or lies limply in her bonds, as so many mainstream damsels do.

These pics are from a prolonged scene in which the slavegirl below is confined in a room bound in various ways and writhes wildly as she attempts to escape. She flips and rolls and writhes but can't escape her bonds, but it's ever so much fun watching her try. Of course, having a stark naked damsel bound like this and writhing like that would be well beyond the purview of everything except a hard-R Skinamax film. But put her in a thong and we go to a soft-R rating suitable to many films. And put her in a leather bikini, however skimpy, and the rating moves to PG-13, even with the same wild writhing. Fully dress a damsel in, say, tight jeans and a body-hugging T-shirt and you're in G or PG territory, probably depending on how wild the writhing is.
Some intelligent mainstream filmmaker may figure this out someday. But I'm not holding my breath.
